Parents need to know that Hotel Transylvania is a good introductory "monster movie" for little kids. The monsters are tame, and the story focuses on Dracula and his daughter, Mavis, as she comes of age (118!). Mavis is respectful to her father, even though she longs for freedom. She shows curiosity and empathy toward humans, her dad, and other monsters. Potentially frightening elements include Dracula's "angry face," which he flashes when he can't control his rage (it lasts only a few seconds, but it's a bit demonic) and a mob scene that puts a central character in danger. There's also a backstory that involves humans killing the main character's mother, but it's handled delicately. Expect toilet and gross-out humor, such as a character passing wind that comes out as a green gas, people eating cakes made of worms, and a fly vomiting green slime onto its hands. Language includes "heck," "God" (as an exclamation), insults like "stupid" and "shut up," and swearing stand-ins such as "holy rabies." There's innuendo, flirting, and a quick kiss between a 118-year-old vampire and a 21-year-old guy.
