“Victory Undone? African American Civil War Veterans & the Wilmington Coup” In-Person
Synopsis: Long after the guns went silent in 1865, U.S. servicemembers remained in Wilmington. African American soldiers and sailors settled in the port city and helped establish churches, schools, and businesses. These men saw some of the promises of freedom and rights they fought for in the Civil War come to fruition – until November 1898. Join us on November 2 as Fort Fisher State Historic Site historian Kaitlin O’Connor talks about the lives of African American veterans and their loved ones before, during, and after the Wilmington Coup d’Etat and Massacre.
Bio: Kaitlin O’Connor is the education and outreach coordinator for Fort Fisher State Historic Site. She has also led the site’s efforts in creating the permanent exhibits for the new, upcoming Visitor Center due to open Summer 2024. Kaitlin holds a Master’s in Public History from N.C. State University.
