Thomas Peters: Fighting the Other Revolution In-Person
From the start, the American Revolution was about more than colonial Americans' fight for independence. Thousands of enslaved people of African descent also saw it as an opportunity to fight for their own freedom. One of those individuals was Thomas Peters -- a man whose journey to freedom takes us from West Africa, Louisiana, and North Carolina, to Nova Scotia and finally, Sierra Leone. Dr. Kim Sherman, lecturer in Atlantic World history at UNC Wilmington, will share Peters' extraordinary story from slavery in Wilmington and his service in the British Army's Black Pioneers regiment to the founding of Freetown, Sierra Leone. Join us as we explore the many definitions of freedom during this 250th anniversary event!
Dr. Kim Sherman is a historian, writer, and textile artist from Wilmington, NC. Kim's research has largely centered around social and environmental history in the British Atlantic World and in the Lower Cape Fear. Kim received a PhD in Modern History from the University of St Andrews in 2018. Having worked in higher education for more than fifteen years, they are currently a Lecturer in Atlantic History at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
