Heritage Lecture Series - Week 2 of 5 - Wilmington's Crusade Against VICE at the turn of the 20th Century In-Person

Tuesday September 24 at 11 a.m. Please join us for a discussion with Shannon Vaughn about Wilmington’s crusade against vice at the turn of the twentieth century. We’ll explore the locations and happenings at infamous “houses of ill-repute,” the saga of saloons and liquor licensing with the city, and, most prominently, the “soiled doves” who at one time ran (and then were run out of) Wilmington.

Shannon Vaughn is a Library Associate in the Local History Room at the New Hanover County Public Library. She earned her MA from UNCW in Public History and wrote her thesis on interpreting African American history at Fort Fisher State Historic Site. Shannon is also the co-editor of The Bulletin of the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society and works closely with the staff and volunteers at the Latimer House Museum. Her current research centers around the experiences of women in Wilmington after the 1898 massacre and coup.
