Please join us for a moderated panel discussion on Saturday October 17 at 11:00am, that will focus on approaches to teaching the history of 1898 Wilmington, North Carolina coup d'état, supporting students studying difficult historical topics, using museums and local history as educational resources, and recognizing the achievements, leadership and resilience of Black Wilmington.
Featuring Olivia Stetler and Zipporah Tunnage, high school students whose National History Day research project examined the Wilmington massacre and coup. They deeply enriched their project by interviewing direct descendants of individuals involved in or impacted by the event, including descendants of Black editor Alex Manly, victim Joshua Halsey, and white supremacist leader William Berry McKoy. The project won first place in the Junior Group Exhibit category at both the district and North Carolina state competitions. They were also awarded the prestigious H. G. Jones North Carolina History Award from the NC state archives.
